CHRISTIAN STUDENT ASSOCIATION (CSA)
The 'Christian Student Association’ (CSA) club is a Christian-based society that thrives on building and enriching the young ladies of Queensburgh Girls’ High School in their walk with Jesus Christ. The CSA society aims to advocate a spirit of love, peace and unity through the principles and teaching of Christ.
We have a number of girls who attend the weekly service held in the Team Teaching Roam. CSA former called JAM was established as a part of the Queensburgh Girls’ culture for over 20 years. In the JAM services and activities, we encourage girls to participate in praise and worship, educational games and motivational testimonies.
During 2011 and 2012 girls raised funds though cake sales, hot beverages and café products. The proceeds were donated to the local community home –Ethelbert Children’s Home. The highlight and most exciting event held by JAM happened in the month of May 2013 when JAM hosted its very first mother-daughter breakfast. This prestigious event hosted about 80 young ladies and their mothers for a morning filled with great food, entertainment, inspiring words and fellowship in the presence of fellow Christians. Many young ladies can bear testament to the positive impact and influence JAM has had and is still continuing to have in their lives.
Meetings are held every Friday during 2nd breaks.

Muslim Students Association (MSA)
The Muslim Students Association is made up of a committed group of girls who meet every Friday to discuss lslam and the Islamic culture. Their healthy attendance each week is a reflection of their desire to learn more about their religion, and their dedication to achieving religious tolerance through understanding. The girls hold occasional prayer meetings and study segments of the Quran. They also challenge stereotypes, making the MSA an appropriate platform for empowering themselves.
Peace Club
The Peace Club of 2013 strives to achieve peace and equality in our school and community. As we approach the middle of the year I, the Chairperson, am proud to say that we have already accomplished a few goals that we have set for the year. However, before I tell you about our achievements, I would like to tell you about the Peace Club. Who we are and what we do? The Peace Club is a branch of a strong and sturdy tree, the Umtapo Centre which is a Non-Governmental Organisation. The Peace Club is open to any members and we raise awareness on the issues that affect today’s society adversely. Our members are hard-working, dedicated and will not hesitate to fight (passive resistance of course!) for what we believe is right and just.
Women and Child Abuse has become a fast-rising disease that has spread throughout the world. The Peace Club performed a presentation on the aforementioned topic to our fellow students during our weekly Assembly. As we are in an all-girls high school, this topic relates especially to us and we should be aware that sexual abuse can happen to anyone, anywhere at any given time.
Another achievement includes an article that was written on the Peace Club. We were contacted by a reporter from the Eastern Express who was curious about the Peace Club. The reporter was extremely pleased once we informed her that the Peace Club’s main goal is to promote equality, unity and women empowerment. Peace Club also strives to decrease the discrimination, racism and other social disturbances that occur in our school and society.
Basically, Peace Club is a close-knit family dedicated to banish the problems that have infiltrated our society. Together with our school, we hope to achieve our goal of banishing the social ills of our environment. We hope our legacy lives on.

Science Club
Science by definition is ‘the intellectual practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment’.
One may think that science is only for geniuses like the renowned Sir Albert Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton as well as Thomas Edison. This is definitely not the case. We as a society label science as being monotonous and incomprehensible to the mind but have you ever wondered how or rather why Sir Albert Einstein or Marie Curie became such prominent figures in the world of science… well simply put in a nutshell it was their CURIOUSITY. There are many questions in this big bad world that are unanswered but they had the hunger for knowledge to know… WHY? Science is used in our everyday lives. How many of us can honestly say that we can live without Blackberries, Tablets, i-Pads and TV’s for a month? We believe not many of us would ‘Survive’ without it. Many teenagers would suffer from what one may call ‘withdrawal symptoms’.
We at QGHS Science club are there to lift that burden off your shoulders and try to provide you with the answers to the enormity of questions that you may have, but your sole goal is to have FUN! The science club is one of the most popular clubs at our school, boasting a large number of eager budding scientists. Meetings are held on a weekly basis and consist of fascinating experiments, discussions on the latest scientific discoveries and the opportunity for each member to explore their own ideas and interest within the field. The club is renowned for its flamboyant exhibitions, including our annual Science fair, where the girls showcase the culmination of their curiosity and hard work. The yearly Science Club magazine provides these dedicated learners with a medium to share their passion with the rest of the school.
Thus far in the year 2013, they have embarked on many projects, learnt fascinating new things and had fun. They began this year with presentations done by the committee as well as the science club members about CERN, time travel as well as supernatural mediums. They also opened the floor to anyone who volunteered to do any experiments.
The girls were also visited by Pyrotechnicians (one who deals with pyrotechnics- the manufacturing of fireworks, matches, and oxygen candles, explosives for mining and quarrying). Mr Maskell and Andrew demonstrated to them how to make gun-powder. Each and every individual in the room was captivated and intrigued by the experiment and it left us speechless. Many learners left the room, wanting to pursue a career in the field of pyrotechniticians and hopefully not wanting to become the next Osama Bin Laden…
They have also executed their skills through the rocket launching competition that occurred in the middle of term 2. We will be showcasing our best rockets at the Science Fair 2013 that will take place in the science week in August. At the Science Fair 2013; the members will be demonstrating their researched experiments. The magazine team have worked hard to produce a science orientated magazine which will be on sale at the Science Fair

The JSE/Liberty Investment Challenge
The JSE/Liberty Investment Challenge is a focused and far-reaching educational programme aimed at introducing South African students to the workings of a securities market and its role in wealth generation as well as creation of employment opportunities while growing the country’s economy.
The Challenge enables students to become aware of the fundamentals of share investment strategies, and encourages a culture of saving as well as making learner’s conscious of everyone’s contribution in the functioning of our economy. Latently, the game also imparts research skills, team work as well as helping students to identify future career opportunities for themselves in the share investment industry. Participating teams test their share trading prowess through an ongoing simulated ‘ghost trading’ programme. Their performance is tracked and measured in a competition against other teams – not necessarily from the same institution, but from schools countrywide.
This year we have 11 teams registered in the various categories available. We meet every Tuesday to discuss various media reports, examine financial websites that may offer insight and to discuss the successes and failures of the team’s recent trades. The team’s trade online through the secure site is http://schools.jse.co.za/ . All learners have learnt valuable experience from the competition thus far and we look forward to the release of the results towards the end of the year.
